She won her first Wimbledon title 1974, and has since won 21 Grand Slam titles. She became the first woman tennis player to win $1 million in prize money. She has an outstanding two-handed backhand and is a great exponent of baseline technique. Evert retired from competitive tennis 1989. From 1974 to 1989 she never failed to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. She married British Davis Cup player John Lloyd 1979 but subsequently divorced him.
